WWDC 2011 Keynote Wrapup – Living Document

We’ll the Steve has spoken and now it’s time to digest all the information that has washed over our eyes and into our heads, it’s going to be an interesting few months for sure.  After the jump you will find information compiled about the various topic Steve has covered.  We’ll be updating sections as needed as we clarify more details.

 

 

Lion

Phil Schiller is giving the overview of OS X 10.7 aka Lion.  Multitouch is built into the system.  Full screen applications – something that photo and video editors are going to love.  Scrollbars are gone since most mice and pads serve as the scroll bar.  Safari has swipe gestures which pages swipe left and right smoothly ala coverflow.  iPhoto in full screen looks great along with Photo Booth.  Mission control looks like Windows 7 window handling, but better.

 

Mac App Store – Pixelmator made 1 Million dollars in their first 20 days of being on the Mac App Store, funny they did not point out that they have over 400,000 apps.

Launchpad – revamped folder launcher introduced with Snow Leopard now part of the UI.

Resume – launches your machine back where your apps were, when you rebooted.  Works system wide.

Autosave – All apps save your work, allows for basic versioning.

iCloud

Steve is up now.  PC “Was” the hub for your media, but now your mobile devices have your media on it and were moving towards having all our media on our devices rather than our PC’s.  Talks about how it’s a hassle to buy a song and sync it between all your devices.  iCloud moves your digital hub into the cloud.  Steve mentions Dropbox :)

iCloud stores your content and pushes it to all your other devices.  Completely integrated into apps.  It just works.  Sounding like an expansion and rebranding of mobile me.

Calendar Sharing – Sync calendars between different people.

Mobile Me is now FREE

View purchase history of apps, and you can push an app to a different device. FREE

Phones automatically backed up to the cloud.

Purchase a new phone, enter apple id, all your content moved over wirelessly

Documents in the Cloud – documents created on an device is kept in the cloud.  Built into Pages, Numbers , etc.  It’s been in since the last update.  Not giving up my dropbox yet.

Photo Stream – store photos in the cloud, share them on other devices. Photos sync wirelessly.  Photos are not perm on cloud, just for 30 days, but stored on your devices as long as you want.  30 days is for syncing.

Side Loading Music wirelessly.. Purchase a song on your Mac, it downloads to your iPhone as well.  You can now re-download your music.  They owe me a few refunds!

iCloud is free

5GB free for Mail, docs, and backups.  Music, Books, and Apps that are purchased stored free and do not count against the limit.

Beta today for IOS 4.3

iCloud stores music you ripped iTunes Match will match your songs with a iTunes AAC 256 K DRM Free version for 24.99 a year…  I’m sold.

Notifications Revamp – Notification Center – All notifications managed beautifully, get to it anywhere by swiping down from top of screen.  Notifications do not interrupt your apps anymore.  Improved lock screen with more information than before and if a notification is on it, swipe the notification and it takes you directly to the app.  Swiping text messages will take you directly to the text.

News Stand – Some sort of publishing app, for subscribing to newspapers and read from iPhone.  Looks like Magazines are included.  Background updating, and offline reading.

Twitter – Really, Facebook should of happened before this.  Twitter built into apps like camera.

Safari – Reader – seems like a fix for reading web pages that do not co-operate, fixing fonts etc and removing distractions so you can read the content.  Tabbed browsing, and the reader list is sync’d across devices.  Tweet from safari.

Reminders – oooohhhhh goes the crowd..   Built in list making app, maybe we can remember to pay our bills.  Can remind you based on location as well.  No more forgetting the milk.

Camera – SPEED making it where you can get in and get out to take that photo before the moment passes.  Double tap home button tap camera button and your’e in.  No unlocking.  Crop and Rotate – Red eye reduction, and gestures.  Volume up to take picture.

Mail – Rich Text formatting, drag addresses, control indentation, flagging, and search content of message.  Can swipe inbox in and out in iPad portrait mode.  S/MIME.  System wide dictionary.  iPad has some keyboard updates with new modes to help thumb typers.

#8 The big one, iPhone is now PC Free.  OTA Updates (Woot I got it right)  and smartly it’s delta’s finally.  Only download what’s updated.  You can setup and activate your iPhone directly from the device.

Game Center – Photos/Avatars, Friends, Suggestions, achievement points, game discovery and purchase directly from game center.

iMessage – looks like SMS free messaging is here between all iDevices.  Syncs messages across your devices as well.  Never lose a conversation if you are away from your phone.  Supported over 3G and Wifi.
