Rogers LTE Beats Verizon’s Though It’s Canadian

Our friends up north have had a few bad years in the broadband front, from caps, and anemic iPhone plans, but now Rogers has shown it’s serious about speed with LTE with ideal tests showing 40Down 20Up megabit speeds.  With latency similar to that experienced in a normal cable modem network, LTE will be a breath of fresh air to those who adopt it early.  I can not wait until we finally see a LTE enabled iPhone, but for now my LTE mifi will do.  If you’re curious if there’s any difference, let me tell you it’s night and day from AT&T 7Mbit speeds to Verizon’s LTE speeds which are normally double and fare better indoors than AT&T due to the lower 700Mhz signal LTE occupies in the states.

OS X Lion Release July 14th

It’s always fun to know people who work at Apple stores.  It looks like a visual refresh is schedule for Wednesday July 13th into July 14th with employees being asked to work overnight to carry out the task.  What is not know at this time is whether any hardware refreshes will come the same day, but it looks for certain that Lion will arrive on the 14th of July.  If you’re worried about your broadband data caps you can drop by any Apple store and download the update over their WiFi.  If the store is crowded hopefully there’s somewhere nearby to do your business, otherwise doing it at home will have to do.

Citadel Securities Analysts Predicts Spring iPhone By Christmas

Shing Yin from Citadel Securities speculates that Sprint will have an iPhone by the Christmas shopping season.  He claims there are no reasons that AT&T or Verizon would particularly oppose this issue, AT&T in particular would remain quiet or invoke more wrath from Sprint’s CEO about AT&T’s acquisition of T-Mobile.  Sprint the last major holdout of unlimited plans would be in an attractive position to lure more cost motivated consumers who are looking for a deal and not to have to worry about going over on their data plans.

Verizon Owns 32% Of iPhone Share in US

Despite launching with a dated iPhone 4G, Verizon has managed to capture 32% of the American iPhone market.  Speculation is that this rise was due to Verizon dropping its unlimited plans today July 7th.  According to search results for this website this past few days searches for Verizon Wireless unlimited plans ending was our top search result.  The rest of us are waiting for a LTE iPhone to help us decide which carrier to go with, but if there’s a LTE model and AT&T does not have comparable coverage versus Verizon Wireless I think the decision will fall towards VZW more often than not.

Apple Files Augmented Reality Patents

In what appears to be a patent on using Augmented Reality on an iPad to overlay different information onto say a map that lets users see the skyline of San Francisco as seen from their perspective and also a top down look at the same area.  This would be beneficial to a lot of people and would also have interesting military uses as well.  Allowing a soldier to get a complete look at the battleground from their perspective would be a key advantage in urban combat.

Malicious Hackers Can Target JailBreakMe.com Exploit

Update: Apple has now stated that they will patch the hole in the next few weeks. Source: Yahoo

Security researchers are warning that due to the exploit that JailBreakMe.com uses we can quickly expect malicious hackers to develop back doors to modify and install malware on your IOS devices.  This impacts any iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch that is running the latest version of IOS 4.  Hackers could find ways to steal data from non jailbroken products that run IOS such as passwords and documents.  When asked Comex who developed the tool to JailBreak the latest IOS stated that Apple may deploy a security update soon.  The next version of IOS version 5, includes safeguards that do not allow loading of custom rom’s on the iPhone unless they’re specially signed by Apple.  So if you upgrade to 5.1 only certain flagged builds of 5.0 would allow you to downgrade.

International Business Times: iPad 2 Plus Not iPad 3

IBTimes is reporting that the next generation of the iPad will be called the iPad 2 Plus.  While not many details were talked about, it was interesting that the main upgrade might be a Retina Display upgrade to the device.  It would be somewhere around 250-300 ppi vs the current 132 ppi, the iPhone sports 326 ppi.  If the rumors are correct it could reduce the shipments in the fall of the iPad 2 as consumers naturally will begin waiting to see what comes out next.

Judge Denies Apple Injunction Against Amazon App Store

U.S. District Judge Phyllis Hamilton did not grant Apple an injunction against Amazon’s App Store saying that while she did not think Apple’s App Store trademark was generic, she disagreed that Apple had shown any potential for consumer confusion in respect to the two different app stores.  The trial is scheduled to begin in October.

The case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California is Apple Inc v. Amazon.com Inc, 11-1327.
