Breaking – Unlocked iPhones Tuesday June 14th

If this is true then customers who has a compatible CDMA or GSM service in the US will be able to buy an iPhone unlocked for full retail price and use it on a carrier of their choosing.  This information provided by Chronicwire over at Twitter is the latest in a series of Rumors including the Back to School sales, and a refresh of the MacBook Air hardware to include Sandybridge and Thunderbolt.  It looks like these announcements will be quiet and expect to see the next Apple media event sometime in September for their usual, but this time we may get a date for iOS 5, although Fall technically goes through Dec 21st, lets hope that Apple does not pull an AT&T with the launch date.

AudioFileEngineering releases Fire 2

From the Author “Our industry leading professional field recorder for iOS just got completely redesigned and rebuilt from the ground up. Although widely recognized by audio professionals as “best in class” we decided to skip the tweaks and create a next generation product incorporating many of the features our users have requested since FiRe’s initial release.”

Dumbest Pre WWDC 2011 Rumor?

I think the guys at Product Reviews are winning the race so far.  They talk about A&T receiving the iPhone 5 only, and Verizon being stuck with the 4G.   Not only would a shafting like this cause Verizon to rethink their Apple strategy, I think users would Revolt rather than switch carriers.  I’d say this has about a zero chance of making it.  What do you think?

AT&T hiding iPhone?

If you go to AT&T Wireless webpage you might notice that the iPhone is missing or at least buried. Why would AT&T do this to one of their hottest selling phones? Rumors have it that there will be some announcement at WWDC and I give it a 50/50 chance. Likely Apple will have an iPhone event later in June to keep focus on iCloud and Lion. If they did announce it then it would be a rare event where they announce many products. Then there is always the possibility that some iOS are specific to the iPhone 5.

IOS 5 To Feature OTA Updates

IOS 5 To Feature OTA Updates

A reported leak over at MacRumors here, talks about some additional language in the App Update page which talks about automatic updates.  Does this also mean that Apple would begin to offer Over The Air updates for IOS along with apps?  Verizon Wireless has long supported OTA for their devices, and Android does this as well.  In the case of Droid they seemed to be pushing 10,000 on one day to check if unknown problems arise and then it picks up in number until everyone is receiving the updates.  Apple could do well to follow a similar update policy to avoid problems that may arise, but their QA also seems to catch most of the major bugs before they’re released.  Again carriers tend to cringe at anything that would increase the amount of data that their customers would be using, although with LTE coming this may be less of a problem because of the bandwidth capabilities of LTE.  IE The faster you download the less time you’re sucking up spectrum.

42Mbps 3G iPhones?

With WWDC only days away the rumor mill is in full swing.  One of the more interesting tidbits out there is the CEO of Telestra the dominant phone company in Australia speaking out on their advanced 3g networks and how the iPhone will be able to take advantage of newer speeds.

I work in the industry and this is theoretically possible.  However, the only way to tell is to wait until one of the tech sites to crack open a new phone and identify the chips.  Several other carriers have upgraded devices through a software patch to take advantage of new speeds when the hardware on the towers is ready.  EVDO is one example where radios from basic EVDO can be upgraded to Rev A through a software upgrade.  Nothing is changing on the RF side, but the software is part of the speed equation.

So like any rumor take it with your requisite grain of NaCl, but know that it is possible to put this feature into the iPhones through a compatible chip and a software upgrade.  The sick thing is that the iPhone is a well entrenched GSM device and CDMA users will most not likely see the phone until the LTE version of the iPhone is out which will be at least another 12-18 months away.
